• Spring: Quiet beaches, cool water, and the best golf weather of the year. Paid parking starts April 1.
• Summer: Peak season, warm water, and many options for activities, concerts, and turtle patrols.
• Fall: Warm ocean temperatures well into September, thinner crowds, and lower rates. Hurricane season runs through November, so travel insurance is worth pricing out.
• Winter: Nearly empty sand, free parking, and relaxed dog rules, with most beach businesses on reduced hours.

How Parking Actually Works

This is one thing a lot of first-timers get confused about — parking. Paid parking runs from April 1 through the end of October, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Outside of those dates and hours, public parking is free. Pricing can vary, so check online for the most up-to-date rates.

Beach Rules

No trip to Sunset Beach is complete without spending time on the beach. However, there are rules the town enforces that you need to be aware of. Most notably:

• Dogs: Must be leashed at all times, on a leash no longer than 10 feet, anywhere in town. From the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, dogs are banned from the beach between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Early mornings and evenings are fair game. Off-season, they are welcome all day on a leash.
• Glass: Not allowed on the beach. Bring cans or plastic.
• Holes: Nothing deeper than 18 inches or wider than 5 feet, and fill them in before you leave. Metal shovels are not permitted.
